Liberal Democrats campaign against Identity Cards
|
The Liberal Democrats have launched a campaign against Labour's Identity Cards. Labour plans to introduce compulsory ID cards across Britain will cost over £10 billion and charge everyone at least £93 for having one! The Liberal Democrats have today launched a petition against the scheme.
Colin Ross, local Liberal Democrat campaigner, said "ID Cards will be expensive, bureaucratic and ineffective. ID Cards are also fundamentally illiberal, there is no good reason for personal information to be stored in this way."
Colin further said "The money would be better spent on 10,000 more police officers, 20,000 Community Support Officers - and there would still would be change! It would be a more effective way to tackle terrorism and crime than a piece of plastic. ID cards do not work - they did not stop the awful attacks in New York and Madrid and there is little evidence to suggest that they would stop a terrorist attack in the UK."
