Liberal Democrats win in Aston by-elections after Labour fraud

Yesterday saw the re-runs of the 2004 Local Elections in the Aston and Bordesley Green wards of Birmingham City Council. The re-runs were required after Labour were found guilty of vote-fraud earlier this year. The Liberal Democrats won the three Aston Seats and the PJP two and Labour one of the Bordesley Green seats.

The make-up of Birmingham City Council is now:

Labour 47

Conservative 39

Liberal Democrat 31

PJP 2

Vacancy 1

Birmingham City Council will continue to be run by a joint administration of the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives. Earlier this a Labour Councillor for Tyburn ward resigned and a by-election will take place in due course.

Ayoub Khan - Liberal Democrat - 2,081 votes

Abdul Aziz -Liberal Democrat - 2,044 votes

Abdul Khalique - Liberal Democrat - 1,905 votes

Ziaul Islam - Labour - 1,896 votes

Tony Kennedy - Labour - 1,843 votes

Changese Khan - Labour - 1,578 votes

Raja Iqbal - Conservative - 282 votes

Anna Dunstan - Green - 182 votes

David Masinda -Conservative - 166 votes

Mohamed Mushtaq - Conservative -148 votes

Three Liberal Democrats elected

Turnout 25.9%

Shoukat Ali Khan - PJP - 2,241 votes

Shafique Hussain Shah - Labour - 2,183 votes

Saeed Mohammed - PJP - 2,065 votes

Stewart Charles Stacey - Labour - 1,875 votes

Qamar Nawaz - Liberal Democrat - 1,372 votes
