Robin Lawrence calls for an end to unfair taxation11.27.27am GMT Sat 19th Nov 2005
The Labour Government's tax policy is simply unfair. Since the election of Tony Blair as Prime Minister the burden of tax has shifted away from those most able to pay to those who are least able to pay. More millionaires have been created in the boardrooms of businesses while pensioners and the poor have been required to pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the wealthy. An example of this is the unfair Council Tax. Robin Lawrence Lib Dem candidate for Park Ward told branch members "The Council Tax is fast becoming an unacceptable tax on the elderly and the poor. The only fair way of solving this matter is to introduce a fairer tax based on people's ability to pay." Mixed messages are being sent out to Wolverhampton's citizens by our Labour MP Rob Marris. He tries to associate himself with the "Is it Fair?" campaign while at the same time voting in favour of the hated Council Tax in Parliament. Not for the first time has Mr Marris been caught saying one thing and doing another. The Lib Dems have challenged Mr Marris to shun the politics of smiling deceit so loved by Tony Blair and tell the residents of Wolverhampton why he often says one thing and then does the opposite. Robin Lawrence said "No-one really enjoys paying tax, but no right minded person could ever agree to a system of taxation that punishes the poor and elderly. The Liberal Democrats are striving to make taxation fairer for everyone"
