Last night Willie Rennie and the Liberal Democrats won a sensational victory in the Dunfermline and West Fife by-election. There was a massive swing of 16.2% from the Labour Party to the Liberal Democrats, just nine months after the General Election. This swing would be enough to see the Liberal Democrats gain Wolverhampton South West at the next General Election.
Colin Ross has this morning launched the Wolverhampton South West Liberal Democrat 2009 Fighting Fund. To win in Wolverhampton South West in the General Election we need to raise a substantial amount of money. If you wish to donate to the fund, or the sign up to a monthly, quarterly or annual Standing Order please contact Colin at colin@wolverhamptonlibdems.org.uk
Colin Ross, Wolverhampton South West's Liberal Democrat candidate at the General Election said "If this swing was repeated locally we would win Wolverhampton South West at the next General Election, it should result in us winning Graiseley, Park and St. Peters wards at the local elections this May. However all our campaigning costs lots money which is why I have this morning set up a fighting fund"
Colin added "This victory has stunned Labour and relegates David Cameron's Conservative Party to fourth in his first major electoral test since becoming Conservative leader. The Liberal Democrats have won both the by-elections held since the General Election, firstly Cheadle beating the Conservatives and now in Dunfermline and West Fife beating Labour, this shows there are no no-go areas for the Liberal Democrats."
Willie Rennie, the Liberal Democrat victor said "There are messages tonight for all the major parties. The Liberal Democrat message that we want a fairer, greener and more democratic society - is one that wins widespread appeal. Labour has lost the confidence of people who supported them for generations. People want a change - but they do not want to go back to the Conservatives. This by-election has shown that the Conservatives are irrelevant in much of Britain. This is a terrible result for David Cameron - the Conservatives continue to decline. This must deeply be a depressing night for the SNP's Alex Salmond following their decline at the General Election."
