The Prime Minister must apologise to the British people over Iraq - Campbell

4.04.00pm GMT Sat 18th Mar 2006

In a speech to Liberal Democrats today, Sir Menzies Campbell MP, called on the Prime Minister and his Cabinet to mark the 3rd anniversary of the invasion of Iraq by apologising to the people of Britain.

Sir Menzies said "The people of Britain deserve an explanation and an understanding of the political decision-making which led to military action and the post-war policy failures which followed it. The case for a parliamentary enquiry into the workings of government both before and after 20th March 2003 is unanswerable. And it is time to go further still if the Prime Minister is sincere in his desire to move on the war."

Sir Menzies concluded by saying "It is now time for the Prime Minister, his Cabinet and his Government to make an apology;an apology to the people of this country and an apology particularly to the families of those who have died, and to those who have been injured."
