Responding to comments made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Iran's right to develop nuclear fuel and Ali Larijani's comments at the Munich Conference on Security Policy, Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell said "Iran's nuclear ambitions can only be contained by engagement not isolation."

Sir Menzies further said "The policy of isolating Iran has led it to seek to influence events by enrolling Shia populations in other Arab states and use any means to advance its national security. In spite of its distasteful characteristics it has interests and influence that cannot be ignored. There are increasing signs of anxiety from within Iran about the consequences of sanctions and isolation. These provide an opportunity that should not be missed. If we persist with an overt threat of military action the situation is likely to escalate for the worse."
