Campbell challenges Brown over Tax Credit system

3.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 11th Jul 2007

At Prime Minister's questions, Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ming Campbell challenged Gordon Brown on the tax credit system which had been set up when Mr Brown was still in the Treasury. Sir Ming stressed that the "money wasted" by fraud and error was heading towards £9bn and there were two million families whose lives had been "made miserable" by these errors. The Prime Minister tried to justify the tax credit system by arguing that it was the "most successful" policy for reducing child poverty and that the Labour party had done a lot in government to end child poverty.
