Government's 10 year Transport Plan fails miserably

10.15.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 14th Aug 2007

The Liberal Democrats have revealed that the government has missed a series of key transport targets set out in its 10 year plan. Liberal Democrat analysis reveals a catalogue of failure, including:

· An increase in train overcrowding;

· Falling bus use outside London;

· A reduction in the number of cycle journeys made, when a tripling was planned;

· Road congestion has increased;

· The government's bypass building program is behind schedule.

Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson said "The government's transport strategy was always pie in the sky, but the extent of this failure is mind-blowing. Ministers should focus their efforts on reducing congestion by creating a modern, properly funded rail network."
