Claire Darke says "Make your own compost"11.58.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 1st Oct 2007
Claire Darke is a keen gardener and makes her own compost. She has a compost bin which will turn her garden and a lot of kitchen waste into a sweet smelling compost in just a few months. Made from black 100% recycled material a compost bin with a sliding hatch for easy access to your finished compost can be obtained from Recycle Now. Phone 0845 077 0757. A larger bin height 10cm and diameter 80cm costs £10 and a smaller bin 90cm high and 74cm diameter costs £8. There is a discount if you buy on line at www.recyclenow.com/compost.
Charlie Dimmock, Celebrity Gardener and Lib Dem supporter says, " I urge as many people as possible to make a pledge and commit to compost. Amazingly around 30 million tonnes of waste comes from our homes each year! With up to 10 million tonnes of that being biodegradable, home composting is a simple and effective way to help protect the environment - yet only a third of us are doing it. We also throw away millions of tonnes of garden waste every year. That's waste equivalent to filling the Royal Albert Hall with grass cuttings, prunings and leaves more than 70 times over that is sent to landfill. Yet those green materials can be successfully recycled and used to make great quality peat-free and reduced peat composts which do a first class job in the garden."
