Thousands of Burmese Buddhist monks and other protesters have been marching in Rangoon despite a crackdown that has reportedly killed at least one monk. Gordon Brown has called for a UN security council meeting today on the crisis. The prime minister said: "The EU is going to look at a whole range of sanctions that could be imposed."

Michael Moore, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs spokesperson said "The bravery and determination of the monks and their supporters in the face of the despotic and oppressive junta is truly inspirational and we must continue to offer our support to the Burmese people in their struggle against tyranny. The international community must do more than watch impotently from the sidelines. The Prime Minister is right to call for an urgent Security Council discussion today and it is essential that European Union and international sanctions on the regime are tightened."
