Zahid Shah takes his crime campaign to the Home Secretary1.22.01pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 14th Dec 2007
Zahid Shah has taken his crime campaign right to the Home Secretary in person. Whitmore Reans residents are angry that the funding for their Street Wardens is about to be axed and asked Zahid for advice. With the help of Lib Dem councillor Robin Lawrence a series of questions has been put to the City's Chief Executive but when he heard that the Home Secretary, Jaquie Smith MP, would be in Wolverhampton he and a group of Whitmore Reans residents waited in the freezing cold outside the Wulfun Hall in order to speak to her.
Ms Smith's security officer agreed that if the group moved away from the official cars he would escort the Home Secretary to meet them and he kept his promise. Ms Smith was introduced to Mrs Shirley Oaks of Austin Street who eloquently explained how valuable the street wardens were and asked that government funding should be continued. The Home Secretary listened politely but gave no answers.
