Zahid Shah backs local campaign to save wardens4.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 13th Feb 2008
St Peter's Liberal Democrat candidate Zahid Shah has backed local residents of Whitmore Reans who are furious at the Labour City Council for axing funding for their Neighbourhood Wardens. Labour Councillors originally axed the Wardens in March until they were pressured by local residents to fund them until the autumn. Zahid said "The wardens need to have their funding continue beyond the autumn. The wardens provide highly visible uniformed patrols in the neighbourhood and in the time since they started have become highly regarded and provide a much appreciated service." Zahid added "The wardens care for the physical appearance of the area. They tackle environmental problems such as litter, graffiti and dog fouling as well as promoting community safety. They also help to deter anti social behaviour, reduce the fear of crime and foster social inclusion."
