40,000 pupils not entered for GCSE Maths and English, Liberal Democrat research shows11.15.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 15th Apr 2008 Over 40,000 children were not entered in GCSE exams for maths and English last year, and over 60,000 children were entered for fewer than five GCSEs, according to figures revealed by the Liberal Democrats. The figures, contained in a parliamentary answer, show that the Government's target that all children should achieve at least five good passes at GCSE is currently unachievable. Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson David Laws said "There is clearly something going wrong when a significant number of 16 year olds are not even being entered for maths and English exams. We need a qualifications system which not only stretches the most academic pupils, but properly recognises the skills and talents of all young people."
