Post Office closures10.29.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 29th Aug 2008
In the last week of August the Post Office announced plans to close the Newhampton Road West Post Office. The nearest post office would be at the Avion Centre. The Royal Mail claimed that the Newhampton Road West Post Office served an average of just 750 to 999 customers a week where as the Avion Centre Post Office serves twice that number and most offices three times as many. There will be a few weeks for 'consultation' before the plan is finalised so Park Ward's Liberal Democrat City Councillors, Robin Lawrence and Claire Darke, issued a special Focus to ask local residents for their views. You can read a PDF version of this Focus in the Park/2008 section of the Download area of this website. At the same time it was announced that Upper Penn Post Office was on the closure list. Penn Liberal Democrat member June Hemsley has launched a "Save out Post Office" petition in the area and the forms are available in the Upper Penn Post Office. June said, "There are very many elderly people who live in this area and there will be no convenient post office for them".
