Councillor Claire Darke and Councillor Robin Lawrence visited The Avondale Project on Tettenhall Road. They went to learn about the work of the Centre and to meet the managers. Councillor Darke has long been concerned that some sections of the community may misunderstand the work of the Project and that it is seen in very negative light.
Meeting several residents, Councillor Darke learned that many of them became homeless because they were ill equipped to cope in the community on their own often being unable to do the basic such as reading, writing, cooking, cleaning and running a household.
Councillors Darke and Lawrence were shown the 24/7 security systems and CCTV in place at The Avondale and met the two deputy managers who help residents with their everyday needs needs that can include taking them to doctors' appointments or helping them with budgeting or basic life skills.
Councillor Robin Lawrence said "As well as having a strict no alcohol or drugs policy the Avondale Project also offers residents a healthy, balanced range of meals available in their own restaurant." Councillor Lawrence added "Independent living is something that we as society should want for everyone. The work that a committed and talented team of people are providing at The Avondale Project for a group of potentially vulnerable people should be commended."
The Liberal Democrat Focus team is grateful for the help of Reverend Barry Law, the Centre's chaplain, for setting up the visit.
