Wolverhampton South West Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Councillor Robin Lawrence has called for action to tackle the recession in Wolverhampton. This follows recent news that Wolverhampton is set to have the highest unemployment rate in the country and already has the second highest rate of empty shops in the country.

Councillor Robin Lawrence has is calling on the Conservative administration to bring together business leaders in Wolverhampton to develop a strategy for nurturing businesses. He is also calling on the Conservatives to set up a federation of small businesses to find out what they most need to help expand and develop. Robin said "The Conservatives promised to set up a group to help promote business across the city. When I last asked about the group's activities the Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise reported that it had not met!"

The Wolverhampton unemployment rate is continuing to increase while the Black Country and the West Midlands are stabilising. This is now becoming a great concern as Wolverhampton's claimant rate is now the second worst of any local authority in the UK and the worst in the West Midlands. Wolverhampton has the second highest rate of empty shops with 20.91% of units empty. This is up by 4.46% since last year.

Nationally the Liberal Democrats have proposed Economic Recovery Plan which is designed to help people left struggling by the credit crunch. The plans are being strongly backed by members in Wolverhampton. The Liberal Democrat measures include tax cuts for low and middle income households, stopping unnecessary repossessions, action to cut energy bills and moves to stop reckless banks jeopardising economic security.
