Wolverhampton South West Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Robin Lawrence has called for more investment in public transport following a survey that found the West Midlands as the most 'Car Dependent' region in England.
The survey by Better Transport in their research, Car Dependency Scorecard, which examined 34 factors that contribute to car dependency, graded the West Midlands with a 'E-' with just 43%. The research highlighted the problem of urban sprawl and the highest traffic volumes on urban residential and shopping streets. In addition, trains and buses are less punctual than elsewhere, train cancellations are high.
Robin said "It is clear not enough is being invested to make buses, trains and the Metro attractive options. At the recent conference Liberal Democrats condemned the recent increases in both regulated and unregulated rail fares, which are higher than the then rate of inflation and bore particularly hard on those who depend on the railway to commute to work. The Liberal Democrats are committed to investing more in the rail service, buses and the Metro."
