Commenting on the Government's policing White Paper which calls for police forces to make savings of £500m, Chris Huhne said "The police should make efficiency savings, but it is difficult to see how these cuts will not affect front-line policing without reform of working practices."

Mr Huhne added "If the Home Secretary wants to save money, an obvious place is the millions being lavished on the ineffective and intrusive ID card scheme. The Liberal Democrats would protect front-line policing and put thousands more officers on the streets."
