On 15 January Eleanor Smith, Labour MP for Wolverhampton South West, put out a statement: "This morning, the 400 employees who work in the Carillion headquarters in my constituency in Wolverhampton, along with many others, woke up to the news that Carillion had gone into liquidation. It probably felt like a bomb had hit them. "

Yet it turns out that she knew the firm was in trouble back in September and did nothing. Ms Smith said she feared that bringing it up in Parliament would have been seen as 'scaremongering'

Park Ward Lib Dem campaigner Nick Machnik-Foster said, "Carillion's problems may have been known in financial circles but not to ordinary folk employed directly or indirectly by them.

As the local MP she should have raised the matter publicly when she first knew of the company's difficulties. Her failure to do so means he has let our City down badly."
