Massive byelection victory by Lib Dems

By Bryan Lewis

On 23rd June in the Tiverton and Honiton byelection, the Lib Dem candidate, Richard Foord, took 52.9% of the vote to defeat the Tories by 6,144 votes and take a constituency that has been Conservative in its various forms for well over a century. It is believed to be the biggest numerical majority ever overturned in a byelection.

The Liberal Democrats have now gained three safe Tory seats on huge swings in a year. Party leader, Sir Ed Davey said "We ran a truly brilliant campaign and have scared Johnson's Conservatives. We have given hope to the British people that a fairer, better way of life is possible."
