Stop Johnson packing the Lords with cronies

There are reports that the Boris Johnson is planning to hand out 20 or more peerages to his supporters when he leaves office. His plan to avoid challenges to the party's legislation is corrupt and fails to understand the basic principles of a second parliamentary chamber.

House of Lords

Crony packed Lords

David Cameron appointed more peers per year than any other prime minister before him and Boris Johnson is set to do more. This isn't just about appointments, but Johnson's willingness to break rules that don't suit him.

The house of Lords is long overdue for major reform including abolishing the ludicrous elections to replace hereditary peers who die.

New polling has found that a majority of people (54%) oppose Johnson's plans to pack the Lords with new peers. The country is opposed to these appointments, they shouldn't happen.

What's more, even amongst Conservatives only 21% think the prime minister should be allowed to pack the Lords in his final weeks in office.

It's time we scrapped our unelected House of Lords and replaced it with a fairly elected second chamber. Our lawmakers must be elected and accountable to the people they serve not just the prime minister who appointed them.
